External sorter is a proper program to externally sort a file that is larger than your physical memory.

Assume you have a file with content showed below:

dss dfdg eebi campus thd
oiu fg gj fnt pt
wsdd ioxw qwrewtw fwh mm
akhl rot zoo nfgf hkl

Use esort to sort column 4(zero-based index) in ascending order:

esort -f sample_file -r 4 -c 5 -ci 4

then the column of index 4 would be sorted:

dss dfdg eebi campus hkl
toiu fg gj fnt mm
wsdd ioxw qwrewtw fwh pt
akhl rot zoo nfgf thd
